Cookbook-Crush

Delicious cookbook reviews for the foodie crowd.

  • Hello and welcome to my blog.

I started cooking when I was in grade school. I remember my very first cookbook, “The Lucky Cook Book for Boys and Girls,” (pictured above). I begged my mother to get it for me through the Scholastic book program at my elementary school. I remember when the book order arrived and I could not stop pouring through the pages. Over the following years, I made several recipes from that cookbook – everything from baked potatoes to sugar cookies. Several of the pages are stained with butter and sugar.

Fast-forward to today, when I am a mother of two grown children and a more sophisticated culinary palette that craves flavor and a schedule that demands that a recipe come together and be on the table in 30 minutes or less.

My best friend, Trish, is probably somewhat responsible for starting my cookbook addiction when she gifted several of them to me. Cookbooks of today are colorful and unique – not like the red and white Betty Crocker cookbook that my mother and grandmother had.

The internet used to be great, right? I remember when I would enter an ingredient or a recipe title in the search bar and would be able to find and follow the recipes I found there. Now, seems like every website I click on has so many ads that the page doesn’t load and I never do get to the recipe. I clicked on something from Facebook the other day, hoping to get a dessert recipe and there were so many ads that my phone locked up. I get that people need to make a living but it shouldn’t be that difficult to try a new recipe.

That’s why I started turning to cookbooks. Then collecting cookbooks became a thing but I don’t just buy any cookbook. First, I thumb through it and see if there are recipes I haven’t seen before that I actually want to try. After several years casually collecting cookbooks, I decided I have a crush and I probably should do something constructive, like review them and share my opinion.

Why should you listen to me? Well, because I love food and flavor and I’ve raised two picky eaters. Let me know what you think of my reviews.
